Pacing this route
This loop trades distances for hairpins: the 25 bends into Kotor and the Tara crossings are the trip, not the traffic between it. Plan no more than 3–4 hours of driving on any single day and the route stays a pleasure.
The order matters: mountains first (Tara, Durmitor) while you are fresh, coast second, and Sarajevo last — the city deserves your most rested day.
Fewer or more days
- Fewer days: drop Sarajevo and run Belgrade–Durmitor–Kotor–Mostar as a 6-day loop; you lose the trip's best city but keep the big mountain-and-bay payoff.
- More days: add the Albanian coast (Shkodra to Ksamil) south of Kotor, or Dubrovnik and Split as a Croatian tail for another 4–5 days.
Practical tips for this route
- Cross borders before 10:00 in summer — the Neum corridor and Montenegro queues double by mid-morning; papers in a folder, not a glovebox.
- Book Kotor and Sarajevo rooms ahead even in shoulder season; both cities have thin old-town bed stock for their fame.
- Cash is king east of Croatia: Bosnia and Montenegro border fees, mountain parking and kafana lunches are cash economies.

How many days do I need for this route?
Eight is the honest minimum for the Belgrade–Durmitor–Kotor–Mostar–Sarajevo loop; twelve lets you breathe in each stop. Under a week, cut a city, not a mountain pass.
Is the driving difficult?
The scenery roads are slow: hairpins, tunnels and occasional shepherds. Anyone comfortable with mountain roads manages it; the 25 bends above Kotor are the famous ones for a reason.
Which stop deserves the extra night?
Sarajevo. The Tunnel of Hope, bazaar and beer halls fill two full days easily, and it is the trip's deepest history stop. Kotor is the runner-up for a slow bay morning.
