Best months for what you actually want to do
- Walking the wall sections — Late April and early October combine clear skies with 8–20°C on the ridgelines — the wall's restored stretches (Mutianyu, Badaling) and wild sections (Jiankou approaches) are all comfortable. Summer heat and winter ice both slow hiking.
- City sightseeing: Forbidden City, hutongs, temples — September and October bring the year's bluest skies before the heating season. Spring adds bloom at the Temple of Heaven park; book the Forbidden City's daily-capped tickets up to 7 days ahead in any season.
- Budget travel — November to March (outside Chinese New Year) is the low season: hotel and flight prices fall, and a dusting of snow on Mutianyu is one of the wall's great sights.
Shoulder season strategy
Avoid National Day Golden Week (1–7 October) at all costs — the wall and the Forbidden City carry their annual peak crowds and hotel prices roughly double. Early October before the holiday and late October after it are both excellent.
Autumn (mid-October to early November) adds red-leaf season at Fragrant Hills; spring can bring occasional sandstorm days in April, so keep one flexible indoor day. For the wall, weekday visits to Mutianyu beat weekend Badaling by an order of magnitude.

When is Golden Week and how bad is it?
1–7 October (National Day) and Chinese New Year (late January or February, date follows the lunar calendar) are the two peak-mobility weeks. Trains, hotels and the wall itself run at maximum crowd — shift your trip a week either side if you can.
Which wall section is best in each season?
Mutianyu works year-round and takes cable cars in winter; Jinshanling is the autumn photographers' choice; the wild Jiankou approaches should wait for dry spring or autumn days — rain-slick brick and summer heat make them genuinely hazardous.
Does Beijing have pollution problems still?
Winter heating season (November to March) can bring hazy spells, though air quality has improved sharply over the decade. Check the AQI the evening before wall days, and keep the museums as your haze backup.
