Pacing this route

The parkway is the attraction: allow a full unhurried day for the Icefields Parkway between Banff and Jasper with stops — it is consistently rated among the world's great drives and rushing it wastes the trip.

Mornings are non-negotiable in July-August: Moraine Lake shuttles, Peyto viewpoints and trailhead parking all have a pre-9:00 gold rush. Structure each day with one booked anchor and one flexible option.

FAQ

How many days for Banff and Jasper?

Ten is the sweet spot the itinerary assumes: three Banff, one parkway day, three Jasper, and buffer days for weather. Six works if you fly into Calgary and skip the return leg.

Do I need a car in the Rockies?

Effectively yes for this route — transit exists in Banff town and on shuttles, but the parkway and Jasper legs demand wheels. Book the rental early; summer Calgary airport stock sells out.

When is the best time for this trip?

Late June to mid-September for trails and lakes, with September the crowd-free bonus (and larch season). July-August trades crowds for conditions that must be confirmed for your dates and the warmest nights.

2026 access changes

Cavell Road and Maligne Canyon remain closed for the 2026 season. The sample route omits Cavell; choose a replacement from currently open sites. Parks Canada closure information.

Moraine Lake Road is closed to personal vehicles, with limited exceptions. Reserve an authorised shuttle or other permitted transport. Lake Louise has a separate access and parking system. Check official Lake Louise and Moraine Lake access guidance before travelling.
