Best months for what you actually want to do
- Li River cruise to Yangshuo — September to November combines lower water with the year's clearest skies — the classic postcard reflections happen now. Spring sailings run at high water with greyer light; the four-hour standard cruise and the bamboo rafts from Yangdi both operate year-round.
- Cycling the Yulong River valley — October and November are ideal: 16–26°C afternoons, dry paths between the villages, and rice fields turning gold. Bike and e-bike hire is cheap in Yangshuo town; start before 9:00 to share the river path with few others.
- Photography and misty winter river — December to February trades colour for atmosphere — cold mornings often wrap the karst peaks in mist, which is the landscape ink painters chase. Xingping's old town and the Xianggong Hill viewpoint work in any season.
Shoulder season strategy
Avoid 1–7 October outright: Golden Week sends domestic crowds and prices to their annual peak, and Li River cabins sell out weeks ahead. Late October after the holiday is the single best-value stretch of the autumn window.
Base yourself in Yangshuo rather than Guilin city for the valley and river scenery, and keep Guilin for the departure city it is. Book cruises and the Impression Liu Sanjie show one or two days ahead in autumn; in summer, mornings only — afternoon thunderstorms are routine from June to August.

When is the rainy season around Guilin?
April to June is the wettest stretch, with 17–19 rain days a month as the spring rains push the Li River to its highest levels. Cruises still run, but expect grey skies and mud-brown water rather than the clear reflections of autumn.
Should I avoid Chinese public holidays?
Yes, where you can. Golden Week (1–7 October), Chinese New Year and the May holiday (1–5 May) multiply domestic visitor numbers and hotel prices. Outside those dates, even high season feels manageably busy.
How hot does summer get?
July and August sit around 32°C with high humidity and afternoon thunderstorms. Sightseeing works if you flip the day: rivers and caves in the morning, long lunches at the peak heat, and the West Street evenings after sunset.
