Separate arrival logistics from sightseeing
Decide how you will reach Akureyri before reserving the northern day trips. For an Icelandair domestic connection, check the airport code carefully: its 2026–27 schedule lists Akureyri service from Reykjavík domestic airport. Icelandair explains the transfer between Keflavík and Reykjavík airports separately. KEF and RKV are not interchangeable terminals.
Check the ticket’s connection and baggage terms, ground transfer and check-in deadline. If arriving late, put an overnight buffer ahead of the domestic connection rather than assigning a distant attraction to arrival day. Road travel needs its own schedule based on actual conditions.
Five flexible northern days
- Arrive in Akureyri. Collect any reserved transport, check local conditions and stay close to town. Use this day to confirm the next day’s driving or tour arrangements.
- Goðafoss and a measured move east. If conditions permit, make the waterfall the main stop and continue toward your chosen Mývatn base. Do not turn a late departure into a long string of roadside stops.
- Mývatn area. Choose a small set of accessible stops for the conditions. Follow marked routes and current restrictions. A shorter day is preferable to arriving at the last stop after conditions worsen.
- Húsavík or a reserve day. A sea excursion is optional and depends on the operator’s go/no-go decision. If cancelled, use time in town or remain at your existing base; do not replace it automatically with a longer drive.
- Return toward Akureyri. Keep this day light. If it connects to an international flight, consider an additional overnight nearer the departure airport instead of relying on every leg working perfectly.
Road and weather checks belong in the itinerary
Check Iceland’s road-condition service and SafeTravel alerts before departure and again before a longer leg. A route visible on a map may be closed or unsuitable for the current vehicle and conditions. Never treat a summer sightseeing sequence as a winter driving guarantee.

Without a car, and with fewer days
Do not assume a city-to-city bus serves every scenic stop. Before booking accommodation, secure the specific tours or local transfers you need, check pickup boundaries, and record the cancellation terms. If the available connections do not fit, use Akureyri as a base and choose fewer confirmed excursions.
With three days, keep Akureyri plus one northern excursion and a buffer. With seven to ten days, add longer stays or a separately checked extension, rather than increasing daily driving. Winter requires a fresh plan based on daylight, forecast and available services.
Budget the disruption, not just the attraction
Price the actual vehicle or tours, accommodation, any one-way charges and airport transfers. Keep room for a changed overnight. This page does not promise whale sightings, aurora visibility, a fixed driving time or a year-round road opening.
A flexible booking is valuable only if you understand its deadline. Save the provider’s contact details and conditions before travelling, particularly for a route that changes accommodation midway through.
