The route alternates city and mountain: Kanazawa (2–3 nights) for gardens and districts, Takayama (2) for the old town and festival energy, Shirakawa-go as a day trip or overnight. Each stop is walkable from its station — packing light is the multiplier.
Onsen etiquette sets the rhythm: baths run 15:00-23:00 and 6:00-9:00, and ryokan dinner is a fixed 18:00-19:00 slot. The itinerary assumes you live by the ryokan clock on those nights.

Six to eight from Tokyo covers both plus Shirakawa-go comfortably; the itinerary's 7–14 range adds Noto or the Alps. Four days is the rushed minimum.
Is Shirakawa-go better as a day trip or overnight?
Overnight if you can — the buses leave and the village belongs to the evening light and the morning mist. Day trips work fine from Takayama if ryokan prices sting.
When is snow season here?
December to March, heaviest in January (Kanazawa averages ~27 snowy days). The gassho-zukuri roofs under snow are the postcard — but check rural bus status the night before.
