Pacing this route
The itinerary clusters by district: Higashiyama temple belt on foot (one day), Arashiyama west (one), north temples (one). Kyoto's buses jam mid-morning — the whole plan assumes 8:00 starts and afternoon tea breaks.
Two-night minimum in one hotel is the wise base: Kyoto rewards returning to the same room after a 20,000-step day rather than repacking.
Fewer or more days
- Fewer days: 3 days covers Higashiyama + Kinkaku-ji/Ryoan-ji + Arashiyama with one Fushimi Inari dawn — a complete Kyoto.
- More days: add Nara (half-day or overnight), the Ohara and Kurama mountain temples, or a shukubo night on Mt Hiei.
Practical tips for this route
- Fushimi Inari is open 24 hours and empty at dawn — the 6:30 visit is the single best crowd-avoidance move in Kyoto.
- Buy the bus pass and carry coins: exact fare is the default, and the change machine eats the unprepared.
- Book ryokan and kaiseki 2–6 months ahead for October-November and late March-April; same-quarter availability is a fantasy in peak.

FAQ
How many days do I need in Kyoto?
Four is the honest minimum, five ideal: the itinerary's 7–10 day frame includes Nara and Osaka as satellite days. Two days is a highlights-only sprint.
Sakura or autumn foliage — which is better?
Foliage (mid-Nov to early Dec) runs longer and spreads across more temples; sakura (late Mar to mid-Apr) is more famous and more crowded. Both need months-ahead bookings; the foliage week is slightly kinder.
Is Arashiyama worth the trip out?
Yes — bamboo grove, Tenryu-ji, the river valley and monkey park fill a full day. Go before 8:00 for the grove, then let the crowds teach you why you did.
