Best months for what you actually want to do
- Great Barrier Reef trips — June-October is the prime reef window: dry, sunny, and outside the box jellyfish season. Visibility peaks late winter; booking 2–3 days out is fine outside the July school holidays.
- Daintree and Atherton Tablelands — The dry months make the rainforest roads and boardwalks comfortable (26–28°C); the wet season turns waterfalls maximal but brings mosquitoes and the occasional closed crossing.
- Southern Queensland: Brisbane, Fraser, Whitsundays — The same June-October window applies; September-October adds warming seas before the summer humidity. Whitsunday sailing season peaks June-August.
Shoulder season strategy
May and late October are the value shoulders: still mostly dry, cheaper than the June-August peak, and the reef boats run full schedules. The stinger (box jellyfish) season is roughly November to May — swim in the netted enclosures or stay snorkel-deep with a stinger suit.
Cyclone season runs November to April; most years pass quietly, but flexible bookings matter for February-March. The Australian summer school holidays (mid-December to late January) double domestic demand on the coast.

When is stinger season?
Box jellyfish and Irukandji are a risk roughly November to May in tropical waters. Swim at netted beaches, wear a full-body stinger suit on reef dives, and heed closures — the risk is seasonal but real.
Is the wet season a bad time to visit?
January-March brings 15-16 rain days, high humidity and cyclone risk, but also the year's biggest waterfalls and lowest rates. The outback and Tablelands stay interesting; the reef can churn up with poor visibility after storms.
When is the best reef visibility?
August-October typically has the clearest water and calmest seas, before the wet-season run-off. July is excellent too but carries the domestic school-holiday surge on boats and accommodation.
