Best months for what you actually want to do
- Panda bases: Chengdu, Dujiangyan, Wolong — Spring and autumn mornings are when the pandas are most active and the queues shortest — arrive at the 7:30-8:00 opening. Summer heat sends the pandas into air-conditioned rooms; the Dujiangyan volunteer programme runs year-round.
- Emei Shan and Leshan Buddha — May and September-October give the best summit odds (the mountain clouds over 200 days a year, but spring/autumn mornings clear). Golden Summit crowds peak on Chinese holidays; the Leshan Buddha river view is best on a weekday morning.
- Sichuan food and teahouse culture — Year-round, but the cool months (November-March) suit hotpot season and the covered teahouses. July-August holds 30°C with high humidity — the Basil-scented evenings are the compensation.
Shoulder season strategy
Late September through November is the strongest window: 19–25°C days, autumn colour on Emei, and pandas active in the cool. April-May matches it with spring blossoms and pre-summer prices.
Avoid Golden Week (1–7 October) and Chinese New Year: the panda base and Leshan carry annual-peak crowds. Sichuan's humidity means overcast is normal — the upside is that the panda viewing is shade-friendly in any season.

When are the pandas most active?
Early morning in cool months — April-May and September-November at the 8:00 opening is ideal. In July-August heat they retreat indoors by mid-morning; feeding times are the other reliable window.
Is summer a bad time for Sichuan?
Chengdu holds 30°C July days with 14 rain days — humid but manageable, and the pandas' indoor viewing still works. The mountains (Emei, Siguniang) are the summer escape, at 10–15°C cooler.
When is Golden Week and should I avoid it?
1–7 October (National Day) and Chinese New Year see domestic travel at maximum. If your dates land inside them, book panda-base entries and trains weeks ahead and do the big sights at opening time.
