1Why South Africa?
South Africa is the world's most underrated safari destination. Kruger National Park has the same Big Five (lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, buffalo) as Kenya's Masai Mara or Tanzania's Serengeti, at one-third the price, with self-drive options that put you in control of your own game-spotting. This 14-day loop stitches Cape Town's wine lands and Table Mountain with a 5-day Garden Route self-drive and a 3-night Kruger safari.

3Cape Town — three days at the bottom of Africa
Cape Town is one of the most physically beautiful cities on Earth: a harbour between Table Mountain and the Atlantic, vineyards 30 minutes inland, penguins on the beach 30 minutes south. Three days is the minimum: Day 1 Table Mountain + V&A Waterfront, Day 2 Cape Point + Boulders Beach penguins, Day 3 the wine lands (Stellenbosch + Franschhoek).
The cable car (€25 round trip) is the easy choice. The real Cape Town experience is one of the three hiking trails up: Platteklip Gorge (3h, the direct route), India Venster (3h, scrambly, best views).
4Hermanus — the whale coast
Hermanus is 1.5h east of Cape Town on the Whale Coast, where the Southern Right whales come to calve in the bay between June and November. From the cliff path in town you can see them 30m from shore.
One night. Eat at Fisherman’s Cottage. Stay at The Marine (€180–280).
5The Garden Route self-drive
The Garden Route is the 300 km stretch of coast between Mossel Bay and Storms River, one of the most scenic drives in the world. Five days is the right pace, and self-drive is the only way to do it. Rent a small car in Cape Town (€30–50/day), drive it through the Garden Route, and drop it in Port Elizabeth.

7Kruger — self-drive safari, the world’s best value
Kruger is the most affordable Big Five safari destination on Earth. Self-drive (rent a car in Johannesburg, €30–50/day) is one-quarter the cost of a guided safari (€300–600/day), and you can see the same animals at the same sightings — the guides drive the same roads.
Three nights minimum inside the park (SANParks rest camps, book at sanparks.org, €30–80/night).

9Johannesburg — one night for context
Johannesburg has the world's best Apartheid Museum (€10, half a day, mandatory before any South Africa trip) and the Soweto township (Mandela's home on Vilakazi Street, the only street in the world with two Nobel laureates’ houses).
One night. Stay in Rosebank or Sandton.
10When to go
Best: May to August.
11Getting around
Cape Town to Garden Route: rental car is the only realistic option. 5–6 days.
Port Elizabeth → Johannesburg: 1h flight (€60–100).
Johannesburg → Kruger: 1h flight to Hoedspruit or Skukuza.

13Hidden detours
14South Africa solo and on a budget
South Africa is one of the best self-drive safari destinations on Earth, and you don't need a tour. Rent a small car in Cape Town, drive the Garden Route for 5 days, fly to Kruger for 3 nights, and self-drive the park. Total budget €1,200–1,800 for 14 days, including flights from Europe.
Kruger is the safari you didn’t know you wanted. The Big Five are the same as Kenya’s Masai Mara — lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, buffalo — but Kruger is one-third the price, self-drive is the norm, and you don’t need a guide. Three nights inside the park is the right minimum. Drive at dawn and dusk when 80% of sightings happen.
Local experiences
📜 Festivals: the Cape Town Minstrel Carnival and the National Arts Festival
The Cape Town Minstrel Carnival (January 2, the 2,000-year-old slave celebration, the 10,000 costumed minstrels marching through the city, the singing, the drumming) is the visual high point of Cape Town. The National Arts Festival (July, Grahamstown, 11 days, 600 shows, the biggest arts festival in Africa) is the cultural anchor.
🍜 Food: the braai and the biltong
The braai (the South African barbecue, the wood fire, the lamb chops, the boerewors sausage, the chakalaka) is the weekend ritual — 80% of South Africans braai at least once a week. The biltong (the dried, cured, spiced beef, the Cape Malay masala) is the snack.
🏟e Customs: the braai, the rugby, the ubuntu
Three rules: the braai is the social event, you don’t show up empty-handed (you bring a salad, a dessert, a case of beer). The rugby: the Springboks are the second religion. The ubuntu (the Zulu concept of “I am because we are”) is the cultural philosophy — you share, you wait for the rest of the party, you help the stranger.
