Best months for what you actually want to do
- Hoi An old town and lantern nights — February-April pairs 23–29°C days with dry evenings for the riverside lantern scene. The 14th day of each lunar month brings the full-moon lantern festival — magical, and the busiest night in town.
- Beaches: My Khe, An Bang — May-August is the true beach season (sea 27–29°C) but the 34°C city heat is real; February-April gives warm-enough water plus workable sightseeing.
- Hue and the Hai Van pass — Hue sits microclimatically wetter and cooler — March-May is its fairest stretch. Motorbike or car over the Hai Van pass is best on a clear March-May morning, before the summer haze.
Shoulder season strategy
September and October are the risk months here: the tail of typhoon season pushes 13-17 rain days, and Hoi An's riverside streets can flood knee-deep. Travel insurance and flexible plans matter more than any packing list.
The lunar-calendar festivals shift yearly: Tet (late January-February) is Vietnam's biggest holiday — many family businesses close for a week, though hotels and major sights run. Book trains and rooms around Tet well ahead.

When is the rainy season in central Vietnam?
September to December, with October and November the wettest (15–17 rain days). This is the region's typhoon-and-flood stretch; Hoi An's old town floods some years. The rest of the country is often dry while the centre drowns — check regionally.
Is summer too hot for the ruins and old town?
June-August holds 33–34°C days with strong sun. Hue's citadel has little shade; do it before 10:00, save the beach for afternoons, and note that Da Nang's sea breeze makes it the more comfortable base in summer.
What is Tet and how does it affect travel?
Tet, the lunar new year (late January to mid-February, dates shift yearly), empties cities as families travel. Trains and flights sell out, many restaurants close for days, but the decorations and flower markets are a cultural peak.
