Best months for what you actually want to do
- The Terracotta Army — April-May and September-October combine 14–26°C pit-hall comfort with manageably busy parking lots. The pits are indoor and huge — summer heat and winter chill matter less here than at outdoor sights.
- City wall, Muslim Quarter and pagodas — Spring and autumn evenings suit the wall circuit by bike (14 km, all seasons but best at 15–25°C). The Muslim Quarter food streets run hardest at night year-round.
- Hua Shan day trips — The granite mountain's hiking season is April to November; October foliage and May greenery are the highlights. Winter cable cars run but the plank walk closes in ice; summer weekends queue for the cable car.
Shoulder season strategy
September-November is the strongest stretch: 11–25°C, clearish skies before winter haze, and the city's best walking weather. April adds blossom around the city wall parks.
Avoid Golden Week (1–7 October): the Terracotta Army carries its annual maximum, and Xi'an's hotels price accordingly. Summer holds 31–33°C — sightsee at dawn, museums midday, food streets after dark, which is how the city lives anyway.

FAQ
When should I visit the Terracotta Army?
Weekday mornings in March-May or September-November, arriving at the 8:30 opening. The pits are covered, so weather is a minor factor — crowds and parking are the real variable. Avoid Golden Week entirely.
How hot does Xi'an get in summer?
July holds 33°C days with high humidity and 10 rain days. The city operates at night in summer — the wall and food streets are evening activities, museums and pits the morning ones.
Is winter worth it?
December-February is cold (4°C days, -4°C nights) but quiet, and hotel prices drop. The Terracotta Army indoors works fine; the wall circuit and Hua Shan are the pieces that suffer, and haze days are more common.
