The highlights

These picks come out of our full Yunnan: Dali, Lijiang & Shangri-La guide - each one earns its place on a first visit.

1. Dali Old Town

Whitewashed Bai-style lanes under the Cangshan mountains, with the Three Pagodas on the plain below and Erhai Lake a short ride away.

2. Erhai Lake loop

Cycle or ride the lakeshore road past fishing villages, wetlands and sunrise photo spots. Two days by e-bike is the classic pace.

3. Lijiang Old Town

UNESCO Naxi wooden architecture, canals and cobblestones - crowded in the centre, quiet five minutes up any hillside lane.

4. Jade Dragon Snow Mountain

A cable car to 4,500 m past glaciers and meadows. Check access and plan gradual ascent. Do not keep ascending with symptoms; seek help and descend when appropriate.

5. Tiger Leaping Gorge

One of the world's great walks: two days of high-trail trekking between Lijiang and Haba, with guesthouses mid-gorge.

Practical tips

Start sightseeing early - the first hours at any famous site are quieter, cooler and better lit. Keep water and a offline map handy, and check opening days: opening days and access rules vary by site.
