Best months for what you actually want to do
- Surf conditions depend on the beach, swell and weather. Choose a qualified instructor and an appropriate break; the dry season does not guarantee calm water or beginner conditions.
- Temples, rice terraces and Ubud — Shoulder months of April, May and October suit the inland side best: lower humidity, green terraces and quieter water temples. Go to Tegallalang or Jatiluwih early morning in any season.
- Budget travel — The November to March wet season is the value window — hotel rates drop 30–50% outside Canggu and rain usually falls in short afternoon bursts rather than all day.
Shoulder season strategy
April and October sit either side of the wet-season boundary and are the smart picks: mostly dry, warm sea, and rates well below the July peak. October can feel humid; April is the steadier of the two.
Book July-August and Christmas-New Year months ahead, especially villa stays in Uluwatu and Canggu. During Nyepi (Balinese Day of Silence, in March, date follows the Saka calendar) the entire island shuts down for a day — airports included — so build it into your dates rather than discovering it on arrival.
