The highlights
These picks come out of our full Canada: Banff & Jasper guide - each one earns its place on a first visit.
1. Lake Louise & Moraine Lake
The turquoise twins of Banff. Moraine Lake is now shuttle-only - book the parks Canada shuttle or a sunrise slot.
2. Icefields Parkway
The 230 km drive between Banff and Jasper past glaciers and turquoise lakes - the most scenic road in North America, take all day.
3. Athabasca Glacier
Walk on the Columbia Icefield with an Ice Explorer or hike the Wilcox Pass viewpoint above it.
4. Johnston Canyon
Catwalks over two waterfalls in a slot canyon, easy from Banff - go before 9 am for the ice-walk solitude in winter.
5. Maligne Lake & Spirit Island
Jasper's boat cruise to the most-photographed island in the Rockies, with bald eagles on the way.
Practical tips
Start sightseeing early - the first hours at any famous site are quieter, cooler and better lit. Keep water and a offline map handy, and check opening days: opening days and access rules vary by site. For timing the whole trip around weather and crowds, see when to visit Canada: Banff & Jasper.
- Reserve appropriate access for Moraine Lake and check parking or transit options separately for Lake Louise — Moraine Lake Road is closed to personal vehicles year-round; check permitted access options.
- The Icefields Parkway is the attraction: plan 6-8 hours Jasper-ward with stops, not a 4-hour sprint.
- Wildlife is most active at dawn and dusk; respect the distance rules — 100 meters for bears, 30 for everything else.
- Book Banff restaurants and canoe rentals several days ahead in July-August.
