How we'd choose
Match the base to the trip, not the other way round. If the plan leans on early starts and famous sights, pick Banff townsite for the shortest walks. If the trip is more about food and evenings out, the livelier quarters pay off. And once the stay runs past a week, splitting between two areas keeps the pace fresh - our 10-14 day itinerary shows how to sequence it. Cost context sits in the Canada: Banff & Jasper budget guide.
- Reserve appropriate access for Moraine Lake and check parking or transit options separately for Lake Louise — Moraine Lake Road is closed to personal vehicles year-round; check permitted access options.
- The Icefields Parkway is the attraction: plan 6-8 hours Jasper-ward with stops, not a 4-hour sprint.
- Wildlife is most active at dawn and dusk; respect the distance rules — 100 meters for bears, 30 for everything else.
- Book Banff restaurants and canoe rentals several days ahead in July-August.

FAQ
Which area of Canada: Banff & Jasper is best for first-time visitors?
Banff townsite is our default recommendation for a first visit - it puts you closest to the headline sights with the easiest logistics.
Where should I stay in Canada: Banff & Jasper on a budget?
The areas above all include guesthouse and mid-range options; staying slightly outside the most famous quarter usually halves the price for a 15-minute walk or a short ride.
Should I stay in one place or split the trip?
For a 10-14 day trip, one base with day trips is simpler; splitting two areas makes sense once you go beyond that or want a beach-and-city mix.
When do the Rockies lakes thaw?
Moraine's turquoise usually shows from mid-June, with Louise a week or two behind. Before that, frozen surfaces are still striking — and far quieter.
2026 access changes
Cavell Road and Maligne Canyon remain closed for the 2026 season. The sample route omits Cavell; choose a replacement from currently open sites. Parks Canada closure information.
Moraine Lake Road is closed to personal vehicles, with limited exceptions. Reserve an authorised shuttle or other permitted transport. Lake Louise has a separate access and parking system. Check official Lake Louise and Moraine Lake access guidance before travelling.
