Best months for what you actually want to do
- Kanazawa gardens and districts — April and October bring 16–20°C days to Kenroku-en and the geisha districts without the Kyoto crush. The Sea of Japan side runs wetter than Tokyo — pack a folding umbrella in every month.
- Takayama, Shirakawa-go and the Alps — Late April combines spring warmth with the mountain villages opening fully; October starts the foliage at altitude. Shirakawa-go's famous snow roofs appear December to February — a different, quieter trip.
- Festivals — Takayama's spring festival lands 14–15 April and the autumn festival 9–10 October; Kanazawa's Hyakumangoku parade is in early June. Accommodation in Takayama books out around festival dates.
Shoulder season strategy
Late May and early June (before the rainy season sets in) are the local secret: fresh green mountains, pre-summer prices, and ryokan availability that vanishes during foliage season.
This is snow country: December to March brings heavy, frequent snow to Kanazawa and the Noto districts. It is atmospheric and photographic, but add buffer time to train and bus plans, and expect some rural sights on shortened hours.

Is the rainy season as bad as in Kyoto?
The June baiu season hits the Sea of Japan side with 14–15 wet days, usually a touch lighter than the Pacific side. Indoor-rich itineraries (museums, sake breweries, onsen) make it a fine time for this region.
How snowy does winter get?
Kanazawa averages around 27 snow-affected days in January. It is one of Japan's snowiest cities of its size — beautiful on Shirakawa-go's gassho roofs, disruptive on rural roads. Carry layers and check the JR West service status.
When is foliage season here?
Mid-November in Kanazawa, earlier (late October) at altitude around Takayama and Kamikochi. Kamikochi's buses stop running mid-November to late April, so plan Alpine visits before the closure.
