The itinerary alternates water and forest days: reef trips are full 8-hour outings with early starts, so the rainforest days (Daintree, Tablelands) deliberately follow as slow days. Two reef trips in a row exhausts the fun out of both.
Build around the trade winds and the stinger calendar: June-October is the dry, calm, stinger-light window the itinerary assumes.
Fewer or more days
- Fewer days: Cairns (2, incl. reef) + Daintree/Cape Tribulation (2) is the 5-day nature core.
- More days: add the Whitsundays sailing leg (3) or drive south to Airlie Beach and the Bowen beaches for the full reef coast.

When is the best time for the reef?
August-October: calm seas, best visibility after the winter, outside stinger peak. July is excellent but carries domestic school-holiday surge pricing.
Is the wet season a write-off?
No — January-March brings waterfalls at full flood, green rainforest and low rates, with 15-16 rain days a month mostly in bursts. The reef visibility suffers after floods; the rainforest never looks better.
