Best months for what you actually want to do
- Safari in Kruger and the private reserves — The dry winter May-August is prime game viewing: thin bush, animals at waterholes, and malaria-risk at its lowest. September and October add spring births; summer game drives work but the bush is dense and green.
- Cape Town and the Winelands — December-February is the classic: 25–27°C, long evenings, and everything open. The southeaster ("Cape Doctor") blows hardest December-February — Table Mountain cableway closes on high-wind days.
- Garden Route and whale coast — Southern right whales hover off Hermanus roughly June to October, peaking September. The Garden Route is pleasant year-round; its winter rain is short and the forests love it.
Shoulder season strategy
September-October and March-April are the value shoulders: whale season overlaps spring flowers (August-September on the West Coast) and the winelands harvest, with prices below the December peak.
December-January is South African school holidays: Cape Town beaches, the cableway and Garden Route rooms book out months ahead. Winter safari mornings start near 5°C — the hot-water bottle and blanket in the game vehicle are tradition for a reason.

When is the best time for safari?
May to August (the dry winter): sparse vegetation and concentrated waterholes make animals easy to find, and the cooler days suit full-day drives. September-October adds newborn animals and warming mornings.
When can I see whales?
Southern right whales frequent the Overberg coast from about June to October, with September usually the peak — Hermanus's cliff-path whale watching is at its best then. Humpbacks pass earlier, June-August.
Is Cape Town windy?
The summer southeaster can blow hard from December to February, especially afternoons; it clears the air but closes the Table Mountain cableway on strong days. Mornings are calmer — schedule the mountain first, beaches after.
