Set the currency and the unit first
Write down whether every price is per person, per room, per vehicle or per group. Keep quotes in the currency charged. If comparing currencies, record the rate and date and allow for payment fees. Our destination budget ranges are editorial planning estimates, not live quotes or verified transaction records.
A worksheet that adds up
Use separate lines for accommodation, meals, local transport, intercity travel, activities, documents and insurance. Add international transport and a reserve. For a shared room or vehicle, divide the price by the number actually sharing.

This is an arithmetic example, not an actual trip or a destination price claim. Flights, intercity tickets, documents, insurance and contingency must still be added. Ten days of travel may include nine nights; count your actual hotel nights.
Check whether a pass really saves money
List the journeys you will take, then compare the fares covered by a pass with its cost and restrictions. The official Japan Rail Pass price page currently lists the adult seven-day Ordinary pass at JPY 50,000 for online purchase. Its overseas-agency table changes to JPY 53,000 for purchases from 1 October 2026. Check your channel and purchase date; a reseller is not the official JR website.
Reduce the costs that matter most
Compare fewer bases, a room with cooking facilities, public transport and activities with flexible dates. Include the extra transfers and lost time when comparing a cheaper flight or accommodation farther away. An overnight journey only saves money if it replaces accommodation you would otherwise pay for and leaves you able to use the following day.
Keep essential costs separate
Use nationality-specific entry rules rather than assigning a single visa fee to a continent. Obtain an insurance quote for your residence, activities and medical circumstances. Keep a reserve for disruptions, and distinguish refundable deposits from money available to spend.
