Choose a manageable first route
Begin with a destination and pace you can manage independently. Research the exact neighbourhoods, transfers and activities. A country-wide safety ranking does not predict what will happen on your route, and no hostel room or destination is automatically the safest choice for every traveller.
Make the arrival straightforward
Confirm the accommodation address, check-in arrangements and a transport option before departure. Save the details offline, together with a map and a contact number. If you arrive late, ask the property how to enter and how to reach it. Set a cash reserve in relation to actual local costs rather than withdrawing an arbitrary number of currency units.
Select accommodation for practical support
Check recent reviews about reception, access control, lockers, neighbourhood conditions and transport. A social hostel can help you meet people; a private room can make rest easier. Choose according to your needs, and keep an alternative if the property does not match the booking.
Keep transport and communication under control
Use established transport providers, check the vehicle and driver against a booking where possible, and avoid accepting an unsolicited replacement ride. Share your itinerary and a check-in plan with someone you trust. Keep emergency contacts and a second way to access essential documents. Be cautious about disclosing your room number or detailed plans to someone you have just met.
Check current local advice
Read the FCDO destination advice and the advice issued for your own nationality, including regional restrictions and information relevant to women, LGBT+ travellers and disabled travellers. Conditions can differ sharply within the same country.
A group excursion can simplify logistics, but assess the operator, equipment and itinerary. For trekking, check permit and guide requirements, weather and escape routes. Keep financial room to change a plan instead of continuing because a booking is prepaid.
Leave room for company and time alone
Walking tours, classes and shared meals can provide company without committing your whole itinerary to strangers. Keep control of your transport and accommodation. Build rest days into a longer journey and avoid treating every unplanned hour as a problem.
