4Guilin — the gateway city
1 million people on the Li River, 4.5 million in the wider prefecture. Most travellers pass through on the way to Yangshuo; spend 2 nights. The city itself is unremarkable — a typical Chinese third-tier city — but the day trips are spectacular.
- Reed Flute Cave (Ludi Yan): 6 km north of the city, a 240-m-long limestone cave with 60+ million-year-old stalactites, the largest in south China. €25. Allow 1.5 hours. The lighting is hilariously 1980s — neon pink, neon green, neon blue — but the cave itself is genuinely spectacular.
- Elephant Trunk Hill (Xiangbi Shan): a 3-million-year-old karst formation that, from the right angle, looks like an elephant drinking from the Li River. The most-photographed single rock in China. €15. 1 hour.
- Daxu Old Town: a 1,500-year-old market town on the Li River, 25 km east of Guilin. Unrestored, with a 3-km cobblestone street and a Ming-dynasty ferry dock. Free. Half-day.
5The Longji Rice Terraces — the most spectacular in China
100 km north of Guilin, 2.5h bus, the Longji ("Dragon's Backbone") terraces are 700 years old, carved by the Zhuang and Yao ethnic minorities, and the most spectacular rice terraces in China. The 3-km hike between Ping'an village and Longji old village is the most photogenic stretch.
Two season modes: flooded (May–June, perfect mirrors of the sky) and harvested (September–October, golden terraces). Both are stunning. €50 entry (includes the villages). Allow 5 hours round trip from Guilin, including the bus, the hike, and lunch at a Zhuang family's stilt house.
6The Li River cruise — Guilin to Yangshuo
The highlight. A 4-hour boat trip down the Li River, 83 km from Guilin to Yangshuo, passing 200+ karst peaks, fishing villages, water buffalo, and the famous 20-RMB note view (the "Xingping Fishing Light" view at Xingping). The cruise leaves Guilin at 9 am, 10 am, or 11 am, and arrives in Yangshuo at 2 pm, 3 pm, or 4 pm. €50 for a standard boat (4-person bench), €150 for a "luxury" boat with a 2-hour Yangshuo-county cruise. Standard is fine.
Pro tip: the cruise is the most-photographed moment, but the river banks from Yangshuo to Xingping are just as beautiful, and a 3-hour bamboo-raft trip (€20) lets you drift in the slower part. The best sunset spot is Cuiping Shan (Cui Ping Mountain) in Xingping.
7Yangshuo — the countryside and the bike loops
80 km south of Guilin, 1.5h bus, the small town of Yangshuo (300,000 people) is the centre of the karst landscape. The West Street (Xi Jie) is touristy, with bars, restaurants, and craft shops. The real Yangshuo is the countryside — the rice paddies, the water buffalo, the cormorant fishermen, and the small villages, all set against karst peaks. Rent a bike and do the Yulong River loop (25 km, 4 hours, mostly flat, €3 per day for a basic bike). The most photogenic stretches:
- Yulong River bridge at Jiuxian: the river winding through 4 karst peaks, a small village on the far bank, cormorant fishermen at sunset.
- Moon Hill: a 380-step climb to a natural arch in a karst peak, 6 km south of Yangshuo. The view is the standard Yangshuo panorama. Allow 2 hours round trip.
- Yangshuo Cooking School: half-day Chinese cooking class in a converted farmhouse, including a market tour. €30. The most relaxing afternoon in the area.
8When to go
Guilin-Yangshuo is one of the rainier parts of China, but has two clear windows:
- April – June: spring, 18–28 °C, the Longji terraces are flooded, the karst peaks are vivid green. The best time.
- September – November: autumn, 18–28 °C, the terraces are golden, the Li River is at its most reflective. The best for photography.
- July – August: hot (32 °C+), humid, the rainiest. Avoid.
- December – February: cold (5–12 °C), rainy, the karst peaks are often misty. The most photogenic in a different way — the classic Chinese landscape painting mood. Low season, low prices.

The 20-yuan note view is the most-photographed single landscape in China — a fisherman on a bamboo raft with cormorants, a karst peak rising from the river, the morning mist. It was first printed on the 20-yuan bill in 1999 and is still there today. Real cormorant fishing is rare and dying out, but the spirit of the image is what you'll feel when you float down the Li River at dawn. Tip: visit the Xingping area in the off-season (November or February) for the most authentic mist, and ask any local fisherman if you can ride with them — use a licensed visitor boat service and confirm its route and price.

📜 Festivals: the Longji Hair Festival and the Yao Panwang
The Longji Hair Festival (long-hair, the Red Yao women cut their hair only once in their lives, at 16, in this ceremony) is in April and October. The Yao Panwang Festival (the King of Yao, every 3-5 years, the biggest Panwang is in Chengyang Dong) is the Yao minority’s most important ritual.

The Guilin rice noodle (¨15-30 per bowl, 2 hours to make, the rice soaked, ground, steamed, pressed, cut) is the dish every local eats at least once a day. The snail rice noodle (the same noodle, the river-snail broth, the smell is intense) is the right answer for the brave.

The Zhuang minority’s bronze drum is the most iconic sound of the Guangxi countryside. The drum is a 1,000-year-old ritual object, the bigger it is, the more important the village. If a village invites you for a drum dance, the right way to participate is to sit in the circle and clap the rhythm.
