Choose fewer bases and allow for traffic
Ubud, Sidemen, Amed and the southern coast offer different kinds of stay. A twelve-day route can include several of them, but transfers and check-ins take time. For a shorter trip, choose an inland base and one coastal area. Do not treat a driving estimate as a fixed appointment time.

Choose transport you can use legally and comfortably
The old statement that no licence is needed for scooter rental was wrong. Confirm that your licence and any required international permit cover the vehicle, and that insurance covers the activity. A rental shop handing over a scooter does not establish your legal entitlement to ride it. Consider a car with a driver if you are not experienced. See the FCDO road-travel advice.
Ask drivers what their quote includes: hours, parking, waiting and overtime can change the total. For ferries and boat trips, check the operator, departure port, luggage allowance and weather policy. Avoid a tight connection between an island boat and an international flight.
Budget in Indonesian rupiah
Bali uses Indonesian rupiah, labelled IDR or Rp. The earlier yen symbols and inconsistent dollar conversions have been removed. As an editorial starting allowance per person, try IDR 500,000–1,000,000 per day for a modest trip or IDR 1,500,000–3,000,000 for more comfortable accommodation and paid activities. These are scenarios, not measured market averages. Replace them with actual room, meal, transport and activity quotes; flights, entry costs and insurance are additional.
Check entry permission and the Bali levy separately
Visa eligibility depends on your passport and purpose. The published visitor visa-on-arrival fee is IDR 500,000 for eligible travellers; Bali's foreign-tourist levy is a separate IDR 150,000, subject to exemptions. Use the official immigration portal and Bali provincial levy service to check your situation and pay. Current arrival declarations should also be checked before departure.
Respect opening hours and conditions
Use published opening times and normal admission arrangements for rice terraces and temples. Do not enter before opening by offering an unofficial payment. Follow dress and access rules at religious sites. For hikes, diving and surf lessons, verify the operator's requirements and the day's conditions; a season alone does not make the sea suitable for a beginner.
